67. Big Red

WhitfordWaterblog Whitford, May 2009.  As I drove through the countryside, I came across this stunning sight – red water – or seemingly.  I just had to get out of the car to take a shot – even though to the right of this pic where the road is, there was major road reconstruction going on, with earthmoving machines and people holding Stop and Go signs.  They probably thought I was crazy to pull into the ditch to take a photo.  Who cares.  I couldn’t get close enough to see why the water was red, but I think perhaps some kind of river weed had taken a hold of this section of water.  Quite amazing anyway, and complemented by the beautiful autumn colouring developing on some of the surrounding trees.

TapuSunsetMay09blog It had been such a miserable day; a chill breeze and miserable rain all day long.  But then, at about 5.30.pm just as Barbara was drawing the curtains for the evening, the sun appeared, only to disappear a few minutes later.  A mad rush to get down to the beach with the camera and capture a stunning end to an ordinary day.

51. Sea Snakes

 Serpents5

Yes, you may well ask what these could possibly have to do with water.  Well, I found them buried right under the wet sand at Pt Chevalier Beach. My friend with me at the time couldn’t believe his eyes as I dug them up.  I would love to know what the symbols mean – I have searched the net in vain.

Serpents3
 Serpents4

How did they become buried in the sand?  Did they fall off a boat?  Did someone take them to the beach for the day and lose them?  I don’t suppose I will ever know.  If you have any ideas, please leave a comment!

Waikoropupu Springs, Takaka, Nelson area.  Reputed to be the cleanest, purest water IN THE WORLD!  The springs throw up 14,000 litres of water per second, which remains at a constant cold temperature of 11.7 degrees.  A Maori treasure and sacred place.  These photos taken on a trip to Nelson in February, 2005.

38. Secret Lake Surprise

SecretLakeTrip2 A brilliant Summer’s day as as friends took us on an adventure to an unknown destination … this was the surprise view as we reached the top of a very scorching hot, huge sand dune.  That water turned out to be a Secret bottomless lake with an entry as sharp as the slope of the dunes, but it’s cool waters were readily enjoyed when we finally got there.  The sand was so hot that we burned the soles of our feet.
